What Freight Brokerage Owners Miss as They Scale

Will Jenkins, founder and CEO of Journey, behind a chessboard.

Episode 104: Mike Riccio, Work the Plan: What Brokerage Owners Miss as They Scale

Released on
September 24, 2026

Mike Riccio has nearly four decades in transportation, including helping build Leonard's Express. Today he runs More Than Miles Consulting, working directly with brokerage owners, and co-founded Open Road Ventures, which acquires freight brokerages. In this episode he and Will Jenkins talk about scaling a brokerage and preparing for what comes after.

Mike's advice for owners is to slow down before moving faster. Define where the business is going, reverse engineer the steps to get there, and stay on the plan when daily problems start pulling the team off course. A plan only works if the people running the business can follow it.

Part of that is connecting the team to the bigger direction of the company. Mike explains why people work harder toward a goal they understand, and why owners need to write the plan down and share it with the team.

The second half covers acquisitions, succession planning, business valuation, partial exits, and what owners should think about before selling. Owners working on a growth plan or getting ready for an exit can talk to Journey about freight brokerage consulting.
